Common Roadster/EV Questions

How far will it go?  200 miles on a charge (EPA rates it at 244)

How long to charge? The short answer is as little as 3.5 hours.  But the best answer is an EV charges overnight so you start each day with a full battery.

But can you take it to the beach?  The reality is the infrastructure is not here yet.  But MUCH progress is being made.

How fast does it go?  I’m told 125, but the fastest I have gone is 105, at the end of the ¼ mile.

How much does it cost?  Right now electricity is equivalent to $.80/gal gasoline.   200 miles of driving cost $5 in electricity.

How long will the battery last?  Tesla says you should have at least 70% range (150 miles) after 8 years or 80,000 miles.  We now have 3 people at 100,000 miles or more and the batteries are holding up.

What type of motor does it have?  An AC 3 phase induction motor,  that runs at 400V and 700 amps.  It produced 245 HP and 271 ft-lb of torque from 0-7000 RPM and then a slow drop off to 14,000 RPM.

What does the car cost?  It is not inexpensive but it will out accelerate and corner a Ferrari 550 and yet is greener than a Prius.  So how much should it cost?

Can I buy one? Not a new one, as they are no longer made.  This was a proof of concept car, only 2500 were made to prove that electric vehicles can be fast, fun, and have a good range.  But you can buy a Tesla Model S sport sedan, Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus EV, or the BMW I3.

Are you not just replacing oil with lithium?  The short answer is no, there is plenty of Lithium.  This is one of the best write-ups I have seen on the subject.

Just how green is electricity?  Surprising much greener than gasoline Another good write-up on the subject.
